Limequats Grown by Premium Organics co-operative at Leioa, Spain

£3.60 / 250g

Grown by the Vallejo family in Andalusia

When we last visited Enrique Vallejo and his son Juan at their small organic citrus farm near Malaga, they let us have a nibble of their latest experimental crops – and we were most impressed by these tasty little lime-kumquat hybrids. An aromatic balance of sour and sweet, limequats can be eaten whole, skin, seeds and all. Enjoy raw, cook into a fragrant chutney, or use the juice and rind to flavour any number of drinks and dishes.

It's rare to see a crop of organic limequats in Europe; these trees, which Juan planted 5 years back, are grown for us only.

Our limequats can arrive either green or yellow, or somewhere in between. The colour tends to be determined by how warm the autumn evenings are in Spain. If they get a 14°C temperature difference between day and night, they will turn from green the yellow, otherwise they'll stay green. But don’t wait for them to change - whatever the colour, they’re still perfectly ripe and full of flavour.

How to prepare

No need to prep; limequats are edible whole, including the sweet, fragrant skin and small seeds inside. They can be used in most recipes that call for kumquats.

Storage

Limequats can be kept in a cool room or the fridge for at least a week.

Class

Our Limequats are sold as class 2. This means that they might not look cosmetically perfect, but they are grown for the very best flavour. (We have to tell you this to satisfy some EU rules).
